Colorado River, From Hoover Dam to Willow Beach
This trip is 12 miles of slow-flowing, clear river with no rapids. Occasional heavy winds can turn this calm river into a choppy paddle with 3 foot swells time to time.
This is not a float trip. You will need to paddle the entire 12 miles from start to finish in order to maintain a proper course. There also can be head winds from the south that can slow you down and make paddling more difficult. Our friendly & experienced guides will assist you every stroke of the way!
The Colorado River water temperature averages 54F/10.5C throughout the year. River water levels and flow rates change throughout the day, with strong currents in some sections of the River.
Water temperatures can range from low 50s in the winter to low 80s during the summer months. Wind can sometimes turn this glassy water into 4 to 6 foot swells with very choppy conditions. We’ll always keep you informed on the weather in the event we need to cancel due to the conditions.
Our experienced guides have wilderness first aid and CPR certifications. They also have extensive knowledge of the history of Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, the Lower Colorado River, geology, wildlife and plants.
Think Sun! Lots of sun!
Dress in light, quick-drying warm layers during winter. Water shoes, Teva style sandals or sneakers are best. NO FLIP-FLOPS please. Long sleeve shirt are helpful. Long-board shorts or bathing suit underneath clothing is also a good idea. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a large hat that shades your whole head and neck are recommended, as well as a small dry-bag for personal items. A water-proof case for your phone or camera is a must. Ziplock bags work well for this.
